Webinar - Matrescence

Matrescence is a developmental process, similar to adolescence, where a mother's brain, body, psychology, identity, and social relationships are shifting in significant ways. While the science is clear that matrescence plays a major role in the emotional well-being of women in early motherhood, this information is rarely shared with women and birthing people. Unfortunately, not sharing this maternal wisdom hurts women, and, in turn, hurts families. Today, mental health issues are the leading cause of pregnancy-related complications, with those complications peaking months into the postpartum period. Further, 80% of postpartum people experience significant emotional distress.

The maternal wisdom that exists deep in the science of matrescence may be a critical missing piece to address the postpartum mental health crisis.  In this presentation, licensed psychologist and clinical researcher, Dr. Katrina Roundfield, will share about the science of matrescence, explain how matrescence affects the mental health of postpartum women, and provide the audience with a practical strategy to support emotional wellness in early motherhood.
